Perfect Picnics

The final weekend of the summer holidays is definitely one to make the most of. Whether you’ve got a trip to the beach planned for that final sea swim or a family get-together in the local country park, it’s the perfect excuse for a great British picnic. There’s something about food eaten al fresco that makes flavours come alive. You can opt for a few simple sandwiches or a full-on banquet, but either way there’s a few bits of kit that will help make your picnic a walk in the park.

Refreshing refreshments – On a hot day, there’s nothing worse than luke-warm drinks. This 4 litre drinks cooler (£39.50 from Debenhams) is a great, easy-to-transport solution. Try filling it with homemade lemonade and plenty of ice.

Set the scene – This pretty throw doubles up as the perfect picnic blanket (£35 down to £28, M&S). It’s machine washable and at 130cm x 180 cm, it will accommodate more family members than the usual purpose-made rugs.

Inspiring ideas – If you’re stuck in a picnic recipe rut, Waterstones have a
fantastic range of picnic and al fresco cookbooks. Try The Picnic Cookbook by Annie Bell or The Great Outdoors Cookbook by Phil Vickery (both £11.99, Watersones).

Colourful crockery – Picnics needn’t mean floppy disposable plates and bendy plastic forks. Treat yourself to some good quality melamine picnicware and you’ll still be using it in years to come (cup £4.50, Debenhams).

Easy entertaining – If you want to put on a spectacular display but just don’t have the time to cook, M&S is your friend. From finger sandwiches to sushi, antipasti to puds; you can pick your favourites in-store on the day or get organised and order special platters in advance.

Of course, you don’t need to organise a big event to enjoy some outdoors eating. Next time you’re shopping at Festival Place, pick up something tasty from one of the food-to-go stands and wander over to the little oasis of calm that is Eastrop Park, just a couple of minutes’ walk away.

Happy nibbling!
